Come To The Cabaret
Come To The Cabaret
This wall-hung sculpture references the playful art of high-brow cabaret burlesque, which is rooted in comedy, satire and song, and was a reaction to repressed Victorian society. Dancers titillated their customers, yet remained modest by using nipple covers. To create this dynamic piece, I started with an unusual styrofoam recycled packing form. Layers of fabrics I hand dyed, hand painted, and then free motion embroidered ( a method of "painting" with thread using a sewing machine) were then stitched to the form and backed with velvet. Layers of rainbow tulle add to the diaphanous feeling and add texture to the human form with breasts. There is a single tassel dangling from one, creating strong intrigue and visual interest. Really a very unique piece and hangs by a single nail from a ring sewn to the back top.
